DJ Shadow Portland Concert reviews
Don't believe the hype!
My friend and I walked into the Lyric Opera House with great skepticism after having heard DJ Shadow in concert was offensive, obnoxious, and even mean to the audience during a show. When setting up the stage, I was surprised at how simple the set up was - just two guitars, a couple of microphones, a piano, and a man with incredible talent. The opening act was a bit of a flat performer, sorry Jessica Lee Mayfield. DJ Shadow played for a little more than 2 hours and engaged in an experience with the audience as if he was sitting in his living room with friends. The concert was one of the best, most intimate performances I've seen in a very long time. He cracked jokes, razzed a few members of the audience, and talked to us like he was talking to a crowd in his living room. I found myself singing harmonies above DJ Shadow's clear voice just because those were missing for me a bit, the songs did seem a bit shorter than their album versions. Throughout the concert, there was an orange glow on the stage which made it harder to see him, but probably easier for him to see us. I will say I'm sure I've never heard his voice sound better on any recording. Thanks DJ Shadow for a lovely evening! Please come back to Charm City again soon!
